Where warmth and tranquility make you feel reborn
The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, situated on the Atlantic Ocean and spanning the entire width of southern Portugal. With a subtropical climate, it enjoys an average of over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually. Its name is derived from the Arabic El-Gharb, meaning west. It was occupied by the Moors for 600 years. However, apart from a few city and castle walls in Silves and Tavira, few remains of this period. Various bridges and ruins from the Roman era can still be found.
The Algarve is known worldwide for its beautiful, miles-long sandy beaches and magnificent golf courses. With 35 courses and a delightful climate, it is a paradise for lovers of this sport. Along the coast, you will also find numerous sandy beaches situated between quiet, small bays. These are surrounded by unique caves, grottoes, and rock formations.
In addition to the many beaches, the landscape is very varied, featuring a hilly interior. This hilly area, with its highest peak being Foia (902 m) near Monchique, is sparsely populated. Here, manual labor is still the primary source of income. Eucalyptus, pine trees, and lavender grow in abundance all year round, while in January and February, almond trees cover the hills with a white blanket. So, there is plenty to discover!
