From the Corralejo harbour, there is a boat that goes to Playa Blanca on Lanzarote every day. What can you do on Lanzarote? – Cueva de los Verdes is a set of caves with a lava tunnel that is 7 kilometres long. It is one of the most interesting volcanic phenomena on the island next to the Jameos del Agua. – The Cactus Gardens, in the north of Costa Teguise, features cacti from the United States, Africa and the Canary Islands. All of them are grown on a bed of old volcanic ash. – Monumento al Campesino (Monument to Farm Workers) is located in the centre of the island, in the town of Mozaga. The monument was built to honour the island’s farming community. It was built by Cesar Manrique and is 15 metres high.
The town of El Cotillo is on the west coast of the northern part of Fuerteventura. At the centre of the town is a small harbour, which is still used by local fishermen. The actual harbour, where many boats are anchored, is relatively new. The defence tower, El Tostón in Spanish, was originally built for protection against English pirates. The tower offers a lovely view of the harbour and beaches and is open to visitors. It also has a tourist information office. To the south of El Cotillo are beaches several kilometres long. Even on busy days, quiet sections can still be found.
Aloe Vera originated on the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. The Aloe Vera plant is a succulent and is related to the lily family (Liliaceae) and the onion. It is one of the many wonders of nature and is therefore often called a miracle plant. When consumed, Aloe Vera not only strengthens the immune system and boosts resistance, it also detoxes and cleanses the intestines. When used externally, it accelerates skin formation and therefore aids the healing of wounds. Aloe Vera also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. At various plantations, you can see how Aloe Vera is processed to make nutritional supplements and cosmetics.
Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the Canary Island Fuerteventura. Around 1800, this city was founded as a harbour to export soda and grain. Before 1957, the city was called Puerto de Cabras (Spanish for ‘port of the goats’). The harbour is currently used for passengers and goods and the ferries to and from Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. IIn this city, you can visit the Nuestra Senora del Rosario church and Casa Museo de Unamuno. The city also has a football club called UD Fuerteventura. Furthermore, the Las Rotondas shopping mall is great for shopping.
Betancuria is located in the middle of Fuerteventura in the municipality of the same name and was the capital city of Fuerteventura for five centuries. The town now has a population of around 600 and is the island’s oldest town. The name Betancuria comes from the Frenchman Jean de Béthencourt, who founded the town between 1402 and 1405. EOne of the town’s interesting sights is the church Iglesia de Santa Maria. Another attraction in Betancuria is the Museum de Arte Sacro, located in the old clergy house of the Iglesia de Santa Maria church. The fact that Betancuria is the island’s oldest town is evident from the remains of a 15th-century convent, built in 1416. This convent, called Ruinas de Convento de San Buenaventura, was the first convent on the islands.
